چکیده

The grassy landscape of north-eastern Uttar Pradesh showed quite high species richness and a total of 287 plant species belonging to 183 genera under 53 families were encountered within the sampled communities. We categorized each of 31 locations under 12 disturbance types under two light regimes. Their effects were observed in relation to different diversity attributes of grassland communities. In general, the number of species and genera was much greater in open condition as compared to that under partial shade condition. Approximately, >55% herbs, 55.5% shrubs and 50% climbers were common to both the light conditions. Over 31% herbs were common under open and >39.54% under partial shade condition at all the three disturbance levels. Nearly 14.28% species were common to all the disturbance level under open condition. In both, open as well as partial-shade conditions, the grassland communities were significantly different in terms of species richness, diversity, dominance and evenness with respect to three different levels of disturbance. The mean value of species richness, diversity and evenness were maximum in partially shaded communities as compared to open communities. The diversity and evenness were higher in moderate level of disturbance under both the light conditions except species richness. Our results also support Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis (IDH) as the communities facing moderate level of disturbance showed high species diversity. A few species like Astercantha longifolia, Cassia absus, Euphorbia hypercifolia, Evolvulus alsinoides, Leucas cephalotus, Perotis indica and Teramnus labialis which were quite uncommon to general grassy landscape were encountered in communities facing low disturbance. Our analysis showed that the moderate level of disturbance in the form of grazing, trampling and cutting are necessary to maintain optimum species diversity. Nevertheless, the degree of exposure did affect the species richness and diversity pattern of the community.

Relationships between Species Diversity and Biomass in Mountainous Habitats in Zagros Rangeland (Case Study: Baneh, Kurdistan, Iran)

Species diversity, richness and biomasses (aboveground biomass) and their relationships are the key variables of ecosystems. This study was conducted to determine the relationship of Species Diversity (SD) and Species Richness (SR) with Above-Ground Biomass (AGB) at a local scale at 5 different habitats (shrubland, forbland, grassland, shrub-forbland and forb-shrubland) in Zagros mountains in w...

Light distribution in mesic grasslands: Spatial patterns and temporal dynamics

Spatial patterns and temporal dynamics of light distribution were investigated using lacunarity analysis, a multi-scale measure of spatial heterogeneity, in three mesic grasslands with different disturbance regimes. Frequency distributions of relative light intensity (RLI) were similar for the two non-disturbed grasslands, despite different composition (forbs vs. caespitose grass) resulting fro...

Contrasting microbial biogeographical patterns between anthropogenic subalpine grasslands and natural alpine grasslands.

The effect of plant species composition on soil microbial communities was studied at the multiregional level. We compared the soil microbial communities of alpine natural grasslands dominated by Carex curvula and anthropogenic subalpine pastures dominated by Nardus stricta. We conducted paired sampling across the Carpathians and the Alps and used Illumina sequencing to reveal the molecular dive...

Ecological Drivers of Ecosystem Diversity in Sahelian Rangeland of Niger

Description of vegetation patterns associated with environmental factors such as grazing, climate, landforms, substrate variables etc. are helpful for land management planning. This study used new synecological tools to investigate plants composition and to provide ecological descriptions of plants communities of communal pastures in Sahelian Ecological Zone of Niger. Vegetation and several env...

Does mechanical disturbance affect the performance and species composition of submerged macrophyte communities?

Submerged macrophyte communities are frequently subjected to disturbance of various frequency and strength. However, there is still little experimental evidence on how mechanical disturbance affects the performance and species composition of such plant communities. In a greenhouse experiment, we constructed wetland communities consisting of five co-occurring clonal submerged macrophyte species ...
